The Audacity of Writing in Today’s World

I read this article. This one here by Bryan Hutchinson at Positive Writer. And I really liked the article. I like what he said about the audacity of being a writer.

The reason I like it is that in these upside down modern times people are rarely audacious anymore. No one really stands up and speaks their mind. It seems everywhere I turn, someone is offended by something. People, on average, tend to shy away from their true feelings on subjects when in public. The fear of being shamed or ridiculed has made humanity cower in a corner and only speak their mind in small circles of close friends and family.

So this begs me to ask the question: are writers audacious anymore? Are there any writers out there writing against the flow of the PC River that flows through our lives daily?

Writing should offer a platform for anyone to speak out in whatever means they deem appropriate. Notice how I bolded that one word “they” go back and read it again with emphasis. The writer is the only person to dictate what is appropriate in their writings. A writer who only writes what is popular, what if the flavor of the month, and what is possibly the least offensive story they can imagine is not audacious.

Audacity

  1. boldness or daring, especially with confident or arrogant disregard for personal safety, conventional thought, or other restrictions.
  2. effrontery or insolence; shameless boldness

To truly be audacious a writer must look into his/ her soul and effectively portray in writing how you feel inside. Is your writing bold or daring? Do you write with shameless boldness or do you edit out certain parts that could be offensive to groups of people? These are things I have never struggled with. Often times my stories tend to piss people off. I don’t write them to piss people off, but that is how I feel. When I bleed my heart onto the page I cannot control how it looks to others.

It is my heart. It is my desires. It is my soul.

They are my words. I own them. I write boldly.

I hope everyone does the same.
