Flash Fiction: Despair

Another quick flash fiction challenge for Write on Wendy. This is a sampling for a story I’m tooling around with. 490 words so I hope someone enjoys it.

Despair

“No!” Dalton screamed, while punching the mirror. The reflective glass cracked, a few shards falling into the sink.

“No,” he said again, more a whimper than a rage-filled scream.

His arms, now braced on the sink, began to tremble slightly. Despair swept over him, the trembling increased, and tears began to fall. In the sixteen years of life, he had only wept a few times. Sure, a few tears had fallen, but not like now.

“This can’t be happening to me.”

One of the slivers of mirror in the sink stared back at him, and he saw them again. Continue reading

Flash Fiction: Nutmeg Spice is Life

A quick story I whipped up super fast. Was good to just throw some words out there real fast and see where it took me. I already know I have major tense errors in this, but after a long day I wasn’t really up to editing it. I am horrible at keeping tense correct.

This is for Write on Wendy’s weekly challenge. Her requirements this week were to write about something to do with spice. I think I did that. Anyways, enjoy. Continue reading

Flash Fiction Challenge: The Super Space Ball

My entry for Write on Wendy’s weekly flash challenge is different from the things I normally write. I had fun writing this one. It is simple and light-hearted. The challenge this week was to write a story (500 words or less) that includes something otherworldly in the story while avoiding clichés. Coming in at 496 words I wrote a fun tale about a boy and his ball. I hope someone enjoys and possibly even cracks a smile. Enjoy. Continue reading

Flash Fiction Challenge: Brutality

Back to blogging. Back to submitting flash fictions. I really enjoy flash fiction challenges. Well….enjoy might be to strong a word. I find them difficult. Difficult but enlightening. Staying within a word limit, sticking to a vague topic. Crafting a functional group of words that gets some kind of point across is challenging. I often go through a few different stories before settling on one I like.

This week was no different. This is the fourth flash I wrote for this single challenge. All four completely different. Yet, this is the one I liked the most……or hated the least. Whichever.

Anyway, this is what I am submitting to Write on Wendy’s weekly flash fiction challenge. I really enjoy her blog and have found useful tips, as well as interesting stories. I highly suggest everyone that stumbles across my meager page, take an internet stroll over to her blog and be amazed. Continue reading

Happiness

Ok, so this is going to be a bit random because a few quite interesting things have happened lately. All of these seemingly unrelated events have an unintended consequence of my personal happiness.

First, I won a writing challenge! It may seem a small feat to some, however for me it was quite a huge step. In fact it happened at a most opportune moment.

Writing is difficult. Like, bang my head against the keyboard because the jumble of words in my head don’t translate to my fingers. Sometimes I stare at my fingers and imagine snapping each one against the keys to force them to produce the words I want to express. When it doesn’t happen it frustrates me, enrages me, causes me to refill my coffee cup and smoke another cigarette so I don’t succumb to my urgings to randomly go on a twelve state killing spree. Ok maybe not that bad. However, it is difficult. I have said before that I didn’t know what I was getting into. I didn’t. Doubt was beginning to peek out from the closet of my mind (somewhere near the right inner ear). It was teasing me that I wasn’t talented enough. That no one cared the words I write. I was beginning to listen to the gremlin. I was writing less, reading less. Finding excuses during my set writing times.

Then BAMMO! I won something
