My thoughts on #BoycottStarWarsVII

Few will care, less will agree with my opinion but here it is anyway. I have a headache so the opinions of others are lost to me right now….well that is usual, but my uncaring is strong today.

Journey back in time. Not light years ago. Not even a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away. No, simply travel back in time 20 years or so ago. People said stupid things. People said stupid things a lot. Journey back even further. People still said stupid things. Hell, set the date on your time travel machine to the early 1800s, 1700s, pick a date in the past where humans gathered in groups. In every period of history, someone somewhere has said something stupid. It happens. People are idiots.

No really, people can be outright dumb. They can be mean and hateful. Certain people can belittle anyone and everyone they meet. They, however are not the majority of the human race. The majority just wants to sit back and try to enjoy life in whatever ways they can. Yet these mean, hateful people do exist.

When humanity first decided to cultivate crops instead of the nomadic herding lifestyle we previously had we began to gather in larger groups. We became interdependent upon one another. We founds needs, desires, strengths, and weaknesses for everyone in our community. Everyone had their place and our communities grew into societies. Yet, even in those early days of humanity settling in small villages they had stupid people. They had naysayers. I am sure more than one person complained, “this farming thing is never going to work!” or “You people are stupid to settle down! I am heading back out to my nomadic lifestyle!” If you think this never happened then you obviously do not understand people.

As our groups grew larger, so did the haters. Those people who never had anything good to say. Throughout history those people were often shunned and sometimes banished. Some were killed or imprisoned for more serious violations, like speaking out against the Leader. Overall, these people were simply ignored. I mean, after all….people say stupid things. When everyone recognized something as being stupid it was given little weight. The groups were larger so there were more stupid people. However, without an audience to spread their ignorance the stupid people just faded away, carrying their stupid thoughts to the grave with them. Without the audience, these people with stupid views had no authority.

Flash forward to right now. Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, everywhere else. Stupidity is rampant. People no longer ignore the stupidity. They engage it and fuel it. I read through this #BoycottStarWarsVII thread on Twitter. After 15 minutes I did not find a single thread that supported this trend. Just mindless people, mindlessly bashing a few letters strung together after a #.  The stupidity of people today have the largest audience in the history of mankind. Instead of ignoring it, humanity tends to fuel it and grant it a greater life than it deserves. Celebrities and the mass media and chiming in on this ridiculous topic. They are fanning the flames. The stupid have all the power, and we are giving it to them.
